Glenville State Stuns Division I Concordia in Nail-Biting Upset -
by primejulian13 on December 23rd, 2024
In what might go down as one of the biggest upsets in recent college basketball history, Division III Glenville State Pioneers defeated Division I Concordia Oregon Cavaliers 83-80 on Saturday night at LCEF Court. This marked Glenville State’s first win of the season, improving their record to 1-4 while snapping Concordia’s undefeated streak and dropping them to 4-1.
Sophomore Center Luke Hurst delivered a standout performance, earning Player of the Game honors. Hurst exploded for a career-high 30 points, hitting five three-pointers and grabbing eight rebounds. This season, Hurst has been averaging 15.2 points per game, a significant leap from his 8.6-point average as a freshman. Against Concordia, he was nothing short of spectacular, seemingly scoring at will and stepping up when his team needed him most.
“We’ve been grinding through a tough start to the season, but tonight we showed what we’re capable of,” Hurst said after the game. “It’s a team effort, and I’m just grateful to do my part.”
The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead, outscoring Concordia 43-35 in the first half. Sophomore forward Christian Hamilton provided critical support with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Todd Foster chipped in 13 points and added crucial defensive plays, including a block and a steal.
Despite Concordia’s second-half surge, led by their star backcourt, Glenville State held their ground. Key defensive stops, including timely rebounds and steals, proved pivotal as the Cavaliers’ comeback fell just short.
“Nobody gave us a chance against a Division I team like Concordia, but our guys believed in themselves,” said recently hired Glenville State head coach Sherman Yuan. “Luke [Hurst] showed why he’s one of the most improved players in our program. The whole team stepped up, especially down the stretch.”
The victory is even more impressive considering the disparity in resources and expectations between the two programs. Concordia entered the matchup undefeated and full of confidence, while Glenville State was still searching for its identity after acquiring a new head coach in Yuan. But Saturday night proved that heart and hustle can level any playing field.
With this win, Glenville State has a chance to build momentum for the rest of their season. If Hurst’s performance is any indication, the Pioneers might just be getting started. Next up, Glenville State returns home to face another tough opponent in Michigan, eager to prove that this victory wasn’t a fluke.
For now, though, the Pioneers can bask in the glory of a hard-fought victory that won’t soon be forgotten.
“I knew these boys had it in ‘em. This was the vision I had when I recruited them,” added Glenville State president primeJulian13.
