To start I’m not looking to argue with anyone about how the game works, I’m honestly just trying to get advise from anyone that is willing to give it. We shot 6 free throws and the other team shot 28. I understand we shoot a lot of threes and that we don’t usually shoot a ton of free throws but I’m trying to see if anyone has any answer for this. Is this just a one game thing where variance happens, is this something to do with my tactics and how I use my players, or is this some skill in players that I don’t see when recruiting that I should be looking for. Thank you to anyone who answers.

A lot of it comes down to random variance from game to game, but I've found a lot of the time the free-throw battle comes down to physical advantages.

For example, in this game you just lost, Mohr and Pastorino were getting to the line a ton. Looking at Mohr, he spent most of the game matched up against either Shepard, who has six speed compared to Mohrs 16, or Molina, who is 6'5" and also slower than Mohr. For Pastorino, he's a super fast guard who can finish at the rim and he was primarily guarded by Choate and Ferry who are both 5'10" and have a combined 7 interior defense.

Finding these physical advantages where either a player can 1)blow by another player or 2)overpower them strength/height wise is a great way to get to the line more and stop your opponent from doing the same.

I'd recommend experimenting a bit more with lineups and doing pre-game scouting to see where you can counter your opponents physically.

Can't look at one game - it's just too small a sample.

If you look for the season, you've got 17.8 vs. 19.7 FTA per game average. That's about two per game. But your team also shoots more threes and has few points in the paint -- so maybe the deficit is reasonable.
