There has been recent discussion on the Discord about a link between OS and Str and looking back at the history of my players it does appear to be the case.

Is this an intentional design decision? Or is there perhaps some unintended link during player creation/development that should be looked at?

On the one hand, its kind of cool to be "in the know", but on the other hand I can't think of any reason these 2 attributes should be linked.

Yes. "Lock", "load" and "launch" are the first words that I can remember when I learned to play basketball on a hoop attached to a barn. These all require Strength.

Yes. Strength is listed under Physical Skills in the Rules of Hardwood. Strength is helpful in order to generate required power to successfully make a jump shot.

It should be more important to range though. You don't have to be strong to shoot a 14 footer. Shooting from 24 feet is a different story.

This explains why I always had a lousy outside shot!

What do people see as the correlation -- between strength and shooting percentage or 3-pointers made?

There is no direction correlation between those two skills per se.

I hadn't noticed it until someone mentioned it in Discord, or this forum post (whichever happened 1st), but check LUPA's alumni page - http://onlinecollegebasketball.org/alumni/380/0

Every one of them who went pro have exactly the same rating for OS and Str :O

Yeah the correlation that's been discussed is between specifically the strength rating and outside shot rating, not necessarily shooting percentages.

Interesting...I think that must be a presentation bug. I will look into it.

I thought it couldn't be true when I first heard it, But I went back and looked through all my old players trying to find a high strength guy with low OS, or a high OS guy with low strength, and I couldn't find one.

For both SMC and ECU the largest difference between OS and Str I could find was 5. Across both teams only 3 players total had more than 3 difference between those 2 attributes.

If I look at every other attribute relative to Strength then I get the range of values I'd expect (+/- 12 to 15), but OS - Str the range of values is just -4 to +5

Yeah...I found a bug. There is definitely miscalculation in the way the scouted value for strength is presented for both current and retired players.

That's going to result in a bit a of strength change with the next update on Thursday for some players. Hope that's not too alarming. I thought of re-running the player update from the season flip, but that had other risks.

I might have to do something else to make sure the retired players strength is returned to it's appropriate value. Still investigating that.

Thanks,

Steve

Will the updated values reflect on the dev graph?

If yes, for all data points? Just the most recent data point?

Eventually it will be in the future. It wouldn't be retroactively corrected in the dev graph.

Does this mean just the presented strength rating was displayed wrong or that players strength ratings weren’t where they should have been? Is the change just fixing what we are seeing or are players becoming weaker and stronger?

exactly what does strength do anyway? don't know much about what any of the skills or attributes actually do and how the various ones are effected... thats probably why I just recruit and not care about much else and that's probably my team stinks. lol

since nothing is really known (or explained in the game manual) i just take things like speed, strength etc at face value with speed being just what is says and that is how fast a guy can run. strength would have the literal meaning of how much weight the guy can push around and on and on.........

exactly what does strength do anyway?

The short answer:
Chicks dig guys with muscles.

The Chat GPT answer -- which I thought was pretty accurate:

Physical Defense & Post Play
Holding position against opponents in the paint (especially for forwards and centers).

Establishing position in the post.

Boxing out for rebounds.

Absorbing contact during drives or layups without losing balance or control.

Finishing through Contact: Strength allows players to absorb bumps from defenders and maintain their balance and shooting motion, leading to more made baskets and potential "and-one" opportunities.

Thank you Steve for this clarification. I know a lot of people do not know what the various skills are for so I'm glad you saw fit to explain. By the way, what is Chat GPT? Thank you.
