So I've been looking at PPP (Points Per Possession), but it seems like there are two formulas:

Most Common:
Pts / (FGAt + 0.44 × FTAt + TO)

One that takes into account Offensive Rebounds:
PPP = Pts / (FGAt + 0.44 × FTAt – OREBt + TO)

Anyone have any knowledge or opinions on this?

I found this link: Hoops Coach

Ken Pomeroy to me is the stats guy in college basketball. This is how he calculates number of possessions which is close to your second calculation:

Possessions = FGA-OR+TO+.475*FTA

He uses .475 instead of .44 for FTs based on historical data in college basketball but either one would be fine.

Here's my questions -- it seems like that's good for team possession, but it seems like individual PPP is a measure of a players scoring prowess. I don't see why one should include Offensive Rebounds (for PPP) and not something else like Steals.

Not sure what should be the FTA factor. I guess I need to read some more about it.

I think because offensive rebounds are usually putbacks or tip ins most of the time? Just a random thought.

I am not seeing anyone subtract out OR for individual PPP which makes sense, otherwise Ben Wallace would have a negative PPP since he just grabbed offensive rebounds and kicked it back out.

For teams it makes sense to subtract it out because an offensive rebound is not another possession since it technically was never lost.

I guess the problem is that the calculation needs to be the same for the individual and the team.

Right now, I'm not using the formula that includes offensive rebounds currently. That's kind of why I started this thread....I'm not sure what the best course is yet.
